2 Big Events in 1 Week CAU Homecoming & NBMBAA Conf. PDF Print E-mail

Just as AUC alumni recover from the Nation's Classic in Washington, D.C. a few weeks back (hats off to Morehouse for playing a good game), it is time to dust off your party outfits and networking ties just in time for two huge events to hit the Atlanta metro area.  First up is Clark Atlanta University's homecoming, always a pleasure, and back after only a few years is the National Black MBA Association Conference.

One thing is for sure, next week and next weekend will be a whirlwind, especially coming on the heels of BET Hip Hop Weekend which blasts off this weekend, culminating in a break out get out of jail bash for T.I. complete with Ciroc bottles for each and every guest courtesy of Diddy. We'll do our best to provide the inside scoop on both CAU's homecoming events and the inside scoop on networking and socializing for the NBMBAA Conference.

Clark Atlanta University Homecoming

CAU's Homecoming took a creative name this year. We like it - Grandeur Cirque du CAU. Rolls off the tongue. October 2 - 9, 2011 are the dates and the full calendar of events for students and alumni may be found here.

We are hearing about a few of the parties online and as we hear about more will post to the calendar or update this blog.

National Black MBA Association Conference Weekend

The National Black MBA Conference is always a great combination of business and pleasure. The 2011 conference, "Power Up Your Profit-ability" will take place October 4-8, in the midst of CAU's homecoming.  If you are registered for the event you'll have access to great seminars and workshops including keynote presentations by John Legend, Common and Roland Martin.

The event will also host it's annual job fair featuring recruiters and hiring managers from most of the major companies in Atlanta and outside the city. If you are an AUC alumnus looking for a job, this is a great place to start and AUC alumni will be in the house. Don't be shy about sharing where you went to school. One thing we love is that CAU alumni typically where special name tags making it easy to spot a fellow AUC grad or student. AUCAlumni.com should be on deck to attend and report out on some of the daytime and nightime events at this year's conference as we did last year in Los Angeles.

It isn't too late to register and step up your professional outreach.

Now for parties....

Invite Only Diageo Party

This is always the "it" party to be at for NBMBAA.

You need to ask someone to get the invite. Get on it, because it will fill up. We weren't lucky enough to get in the event in LA last year. That won't happen again and we won't be standing in line an hour this year either.

MBA Live - Sponsored by Coca-Cola

Venue TBD

Featuring Biz Markie and Laz Alonzo

MBA Live

200 Peachtree

There is a rumored Target Party at the Tabernacle on Thursday or Friday - which we remember being one of the better NBMBAA corporate receptions before Diageo hit the social NBMBAA scene. If anyone has any details hit us up at @AUCAlumnidotcom

The buzz is going and the countdown is on. Morehouse College (GO AUC) and Howard University will square off in a little more than a month at RFK stadium in the DC Metro. This will be the game to end all games and we are not just talking about on the field. From all signs on the social media scene graduates of the Atlanta University Center will be in full force for the game and what will inevitably be a weekend of consorting, parting, networking and people watching. Not just those from dear old Morehouse will be on hand either. We've heard about road trips consisting of Spelman and CAU alumni as well. It will be a show of southern support as the Tigers take on the Bisons. If that fight were to go down in nature, there is no guessing as to who would win.

AUCAlumni.com will do all we can to get you the information prior to the game about where to go, who to see and what to buy while you are in the District.  Right now most of the relevant information may be found on the well done Nation's Classic website.

CAU Homecoming: A Walking Tour PDF Print E-mail
Written by T. Murray
Wednesday, 13 October 2010 01:03

AUCAlumni.com took a stroll through CAU's campus the day of the Homecoming game.  The weather could not have been better. For those who couldn't make it take this walk down memory lane with us.

We parked near the back gate of the Spelman College campus and walked towards Panther Stadium.

So far so good.

Closing in on the festivities we could start to see the sites and smell the aromas of grilled edibles that are uniquely CAU homecoming.

As we get closer to the tailgate there are more people and more school spirit on display.

Welcomed with open arms.  On the outskirts of the playing field is where CAU alumni gathered to watch the game, grill and get it in.

It didn't take long until we were in the thick of things. So many people and so little time to kick it!

If you missed the game check out this recap on YouTube.com

Panthers win 19 to 14 against Stillman!! It was a Homecoming victory that came down to the fourth quarter!

A History of Posting All the Homecoming Parties

Every year AUCAlumni.com has provided the rundown of every party we can obtain details for during Spelman and Morehouse Homecoming weekend. This year has been no different and in addition to the website we have been able to get party details from both our twitter account and Facebook fan page.  Each year it really isn't any different. There are a ton of parties to chose from, each with it's own unique flavor and special features.  This is the first year we've written a blog to go along with "The Rundown" as we thought it would be appropriate to share some of the details of the Friday night parties for everyone to enjoy and read through before getting dressed and ultimately deciding where to spend the evening.  We all know that at the tailgate there will be tales of where the "best" party was, so our job is to equip you with the information you need.

Here are your choices and remember events are also listed on the calendar on our homepage! :)

Choose wisely!

Homecoming Happy Hours (Friday)

Everyone knows that you don't have to wait until late Friday night to get the party started, especially if you flew in on Thursday. For those in ATL, when 5PM hits a quick change of clothes, or not, and you are ready to hit a happy hour that is poppin with SpelHouse energy.

SpelHouse Homecoming Edition of Our Kind of People - Rare Soul Tapas - 554 Piedmont

A weekly staple in Atlanta, Our Kind of People has a following all it's own. The brainchild of "Fertile Mind" aka Brock Mayers (Morehouse c/o 2000) this event always draws a crowd of young professionals, with the homecoming edition serving as a welcomed reunion soiree for Spelman and Morehouse alumni already in town or visiting for the weekend.

Please arrive: 5PM - 10PM

Perks - Free chef's choice tapas from 5PM - 8PM

$5 Spelhouse cocktails

Price - Free

Pleasantries for your ear: DJ Tabone

Put your name on the guest list: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=151896868178323&index=1

Other Happy Hours:

The Morehouse and Spelman Alumni Associations are hosting a Homecoming Happy Hour at Twelve Hotel in downtown ATL (not the Atlantic Station location). Hats off to the organizations for putting something cool together.

After the Happy Hour - HOMECOMING PARTIES

Three Black Loves...Three Black Loves...Oh so much fun...

We have to start with the menage a trois of Black Love Parties going on. Many people already know that there are 3 parties this year called "Black Love VI." The real mystery isn't who is the "true" originator of the name. The mystery is who will come out to be most successful. Only time will tell. We want to help you by telling you that these 3 parties, while similar in name have some differentiators you should keep in mind before you make your party destination final.

I Love the 90s/Black Love VI - W Hotel Midtown - 188 14th Street

Hosting Homecoming parties for over a decade, Prophecy Events (founded by product of Morehouse Mr. Luther J. McElroy) is bringing the party to the whatever/whenever luxury that is the W Hotel Midtown. Taking over a ballroom, Lobby Bar and Whiskey Park this is truly two parties in one. For the young alumni there is the Black Love Experience. For the more mature crowd there is I Love the 90s. You could say there is something for everyone with this experience and with room discounts offered along with early ticket sales, Homecoming revelers could end the night where they start it fairly easily.

Please arrive: 9:00 PM - 2:30 AM

Perks - Biz Markie, SpelHouse is taking over the ENTIRE W Hotel. Discounted hotel rooms.

Price - Buy online - http://blacklove2010-prophecy.eventbrite.com/

Pleasantries for your ear: Biz Markie, DJ-J1, DJPNUT and plenty more.

Black Love VI - Homecooking - 595 North Event Venue & Lounge

This event, promoted by Privileged Inc., comes with it's own short film. It's a must watch and a unique way to advertise. If this were a television show, we'd watch the next episode.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5V9tLqfMwvg

Privileged has a reputation for putting on memorable Homecoming events so we expect they are aiming to please partygoers.

Please arrive: 9:00 PM - 3:00 AM

Perks - Food provided by the Morehouse/Spelman alumni owned Black Tie Barbecue

Price - Buy online - http://blacklovesix.eventbrite.com/

Pleasantries for your ear: Joey Thee DJ

The Real Black Love VI (6) - Compound

We found this one on Facebook, but there really isn't alot of detail. Perhaps this Black Love party got lost in the shuffle, but there is a flyer so we're sharing it.

Please arrive: 9:00 PM - 3:30 AM (one page says 4:30)

Perks - Unknown

Price - Facebook page says $15 but can't confirm a link to buy online.

Pleasantries for your ear: Unknown

Homecoming Parties NOT Called Black Love

Morehouse/Spelman Homecoming KickOff - Room Service Lounge - 1937 Piedmont Circle

98 Productions (led by Morehouse alumni Myron "BDoe" Burney" and Mike "Big Mike" Hatcher) has always gone for the less theatrical names that just say what the night is about. In this case, they are hosting a Homecoming party that doesn't end until 6AM. This can be any after party to the three Black Loves above or a place to kick it your entire evening.

Sol Fusion - Reminisce Edition - STRIP - Atlantic Station - 9 PM Doors Open

Another well known name on the Atlanta nightlife scene is Sol Fusion, the eclectic and crowd pleasing creation of event planner/promoter J. Carter. Enjoy music from '85 to '99 while partying on 3 levels. Free admission until 10:30 PM for everyone. With a host committee that includes Spelman alumnae including marketing master Amika King, this party at STRIP in Atlantic Station is another alternative for Homecoming party goers.

SpelHouse Class of 1990 Reunion Party - Havana Club - 3112 Piedmont

It's reunion time and the Class of 1990 is going to take a trip down memory lane that ends in the heart of Buckhead at the posh Havana Club. Those alumni who were around remember the original Havana Club, but can also appreciate this much larger remake.

SATURDAY HOMECOMING PARTIES

We've only told you about the Friday events and we are ALREADY tired! For those of you who can still kick it after tailgating all day Saturday here are a few events we've heard about.

  • TalkisStillCheap.com Blog Anniversary 3PM - 7PM @ ICON Lounge

  • DeJavu Homecoming Party - "We Own the Night" at Compound Nightclub
  • Official Morehouse/Spelman Homecoming Afterparty at Velvet Room (we hear 18 and up)

AUCAlumni.com Chats with Idris Elba at the 2010 NBMBAA Conference PDF Print E-mail
Written by Robin Dionne
Wednesday, 06 October 2010 16:10

AUCalumni.com caught up with British born actor Idris Elba at the 32nd Annual National Black MBA Association Conference and Exposition in Los Angeles, CA.  Elba said he was invited to attend the conference to speak about “Keys To Success”  “I just wanted to part with some of the stories and some of the tales and the knowledge that I have. Oftentimes people ask me “How did you do it?   You came from England you’re here, you’re working, you’re doing it. I think it is a great opportunity for me to share some of that.  It is an unbelievable story and what I want to talk about is, it is about hard work, and it is about patience and also diligence.”

Idris also took a few moments to talk about his recent trip to South Africa with 21 students from 12 historically black colleges.  Among those were AUC students, Fubi Oluwole from Clark Atlanta University, Stephen Love from Morehouse College and Karen Evans from Spelman College.  While in South Africa Idris encouraged the students to embrace their lineage and represent the African American culture with pride.  The students were winners of the Coca-Cola “Open Happiness Tour” a video contest surrounding Coca-Cola’s RAIN “Water for Schools” initiative.  The students toured South Africa during the FIFA world cup the first ever to be help in South Africa.

When asked about adjusting to American culture, Idris talked about the similarities in African Caribbean culture in London and African American culture here in the states.  Idris also shared that his grandfather is from Kansas City and adapting was very easy.  He commented that when we (African Americans) cross the pond that once we get used to the weather, food and hair products in England we adapt well.

Idris Elba is known for his role of Russell Stringer Bell on HBO’s The Wire.  Other television credits include The Office, The C Word.  His film credits include American Gangster, Obsessed, Takers and the upcoming and highly anticipated Marvel Comics super hero thriller Thor.
